A new Executive Director
At His Mansion, God turns broken people into leaders who proclaim His joyful Gospel message. “Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, and tell of his deeds in songs of joy!” (Psalm 107:21-22)
One of these leaders is Courtney Jones, who will be stepping fully into His Mansion’s Executive Director position in July 2024.
Courtney arrived at His Mansion in August 2009 as a Resident. A thirty-year-old with a twelve-year opiate addiction, he expected to be at His Mansion for only a year just to go home sober. “I really didn’t have much of a concept of how kind and generous God is,” Courtney says. God healed him as a Resident, and then matured his faith by calling him to be a Servant Leader, a counselor and instructor, and Director of Programs. During those years he met and married his wife Noelle and they had their first child. After a two-year absence, Courtney returned to His Mansion in 2020 with his growing family to become Chief Operating Officer.
Over the past three years, God used Frank Vitale to prepare Courtney to become the next Executive Director. A long-standing supporter of His Mansion, Frank has a Master’s degree in Education Administration and over twenty years of full-time ministry experience. When the Board of Directors asked Frank to assist the leadership in 2020, he quickly identified Courtney as a good candidate for Executive Director. “He just needs time,” Frank told the Board, “and he needs somebody to invest in him and show him what leadership looks like at this level.” When the Board asked Frank to implement a transition plan he had written for them, Frank prayerfully stepped in as the Executive Director in 2021, working closely with Courtney. “I always make that joke with Courtney about being his mentor and his tormentor,” Frank smiles, but adds, “In this role, I think you need to have a pastor’s heart and Courtney has that.”
Courtney claims to have learned a pastoral mindset from Frank, as well as the importance of leading with joy. Their repartee as His Mansion Coffee House hosts is a small glimpse of that. “He’s noticing the proclivity for His Mansion to dwell in the difficulty at the expense of the joy of knowing the Lord,” Courtney says. “Joy has been a big big learning thing for me that I’ve absorbed from observing him.” He also witnessed Frank praying daily for every name on His Mansion’s community list: “That was something I saw and admired and got inquisitive about and started joining him.” Together they developed a prayerful posture toward all of His Mansion’s work.
Consequently, God has given Courtney the desire to shepherd His Mansion as a community. God works through every community member, even children, which Courtney experienced as a Resident. “We have to stoke the fire of this being a Christ-centered community,” Courtney states. “The resident program succeeds to the extent that this community is a committed, invested community in being a representation of the Body of Christ.” “It’s God’s ministry,” Frank says, “and we’re joining Him in what He’s doing, and I think Courtney absolutely gets that.” Asked what he loves about His Mansion, Courtney responds, “I love seeing how broken people come alive and become messengers of the Gospel, firsthand messengers, as messy as they are still.”
