Jeremy’s story of restoration
When thirty-year-old Jeremy Begnoche applied to the Resident Recovery Program, he simply hoped for a healthier lifestyle, healing from his drinking problem, and reconciliation with his family. “The importance of God in my life had not really come to mind when applying,” Jeremy admits.
Born and raised in Vermont, he grew up going to church with his family and playing sports. He participated in a middle school youth group and an Awana Bible club, where he loved rewards and hated memorising Scripture. In high school he stopped attending church and started using drugs and drinking, until he was selling his prized possessions to get more. The pattern continued through his twenties, in and out of substance abuse programs and shelters. One by one, people asked him to leave as he continued to buy and use drugs. When a final door closed, he applied to His Mansion. “When I didn’t have a way, the Lord presented me one,” Jeremy says. “He was a very big light in a time of darkness for me.”
Once God brought him to His Mansion in the summer of 2023, He started awakening Jeremy’s heart through the rhythms of prayer and worship in the community. At first Jeremy felt uncomfortable in the chapel services called “Prayer and Share.” He now testifies, “God has changed my view of Himself through prayer and praise/worship. Before His Mansion, I never believed praising God to be fun.” Through classes and daily practice he learned how to open up to God and others in prayer. That connection to God and to Christ’s Body grew him and started turning his desires away from his addiction. “I’ve now grown much closer to the Lord,” he says. “I’ve found Him in my life in many ways. He brings unparalleled, immense amounts of joy to my life.”
After completing the program in June 2024, Jeremy returned as a Servant Leader.
More from Jeremy
What do you like most about being a Servant Leader?
“Being able to do for the current Residents what was done for me. I love being able to pass on the kindness that was shown to me. I am leading through what I have learned here.”
During your time at His Mansion, what is an important piece of scripture that God has used in your life?
“2 Timothy 2:22
Coming here was a big step. It took a lot for me to finally commit. I knew it was time for me to grow up and follow the Lord.”
Staff spotlight: Sara Dupre
“Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength.” Isaiah 40:30-31, one of Sara’s favorite parts of scripture
Since the summer of 2023, Sara Dupre has served on staff in Food Services as a cook. Her first experience of His Mansion came a few years before she joined the staff community.
In September 2020 Sara’s brother, Robert, graduated from the Resident Recovery Program. Sara attended his graduation ceremony, and it was there that she began to see the work God was doing on The Hill. Looking back at seeing her brother that day, she remembers a “complete change in who he was.” She knew Robert had been given a new life in Christ. The Lord used Robert’s transformation to open her eyes to the burden of religion and legalism she carried, while revealing His true character and heart as a loving God.
Over the next year God continued to work on Sara’s heart. She knew she wanted to be part of the mission, and applied to the Servant Leader Program. In May 2022 she arrived on The Hill and began her season as a Servant Leader. “I don’t think I realized how legalistic I really was,” she recalls. Through the program she “learned the true heart of Christ and how to have a real relationship with Him,” and built friendships she says will be “life-long.”
As she finished her time as a Servant Leader, the Lord opened a door for her to join the staff as a cook.
